PTN, you really think the old farts who run the show would want to pay for those? This is the bunch of clowns who begrudge you a second paper towel for your hands...

Why does the WT care if a sister is over 40?
by NewChapter inhttp://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/226253/1/special-pioneers-i-wonder-if-this-is-what-jesus-wanted-their-assignment-deduced-to.
in the above thread, the special pioneer slip asks if a sister is over 40. i had never seen anything like this, and wondered if anyone knew why.. nc.

Playing devil's advocate for the moment: maybe it's to assess her fertility. Either to ascertain whether she's likely to stop slaving for the WTS in order to selfishly have a child of her own, or conversely whether she's still good breeding stock and likely to produce a litter of future dubbies..? Troll mode off...

Windows 8 beta, the tiles interface sucks
by moshe ini downloaded and installed windows 8 beta on a six year old laptop to check it out.
i found out i don't like the new graphical tiles interface at all.
maybe i am just stuck in the old windows format and don't like change.

Don't dismiss the possibility out of hand, six years ago the PC industry was gearing up for Vista. That OS has a greater system requirement than Win7 & is more resource hungry. If your system can run Vista, or is labelled as "Vista Ready", it could well run Win7.
The only problem could be driver support, not all manufacturers released appropriate drivers for older kit to "encourage" you to "invest" in new hardware. If the generic Windoze drivers don't work or aren't present, try installing the Vista drivers. The systems are closely related enough for it to work, just as we used to use Win 2000 drivers for XP when it was first released. You might have to live without Aero Glass, but that's just eye candy.
I've had Win7 running well on an old Dell Latitude D510, admittedly an up-specced machine, but it's still a single core 32-bit processor. Maxing out the memory helps.

Ubuntu has changed a lot in recent years, it too has had a radical interface redesign. The latest implementation of it's "Unity" desktop is functional but also very tablet-centric. It has an apple-esque panel, or toolbar, at the top of the screen and a column of quick launch icons along the left side of the screen. Unity is unique to Ubuntu, and is also graphically resource hungry.

That's news to me. It might be a national or regional issue, for instance software patents don't exist in the U.K. (and the rest of Europe I think) so we wouldn't be penalised. I suspect you could circumvent the problem by downloading something like VLC media player or Handbrake (up to version 0.9.2) which include the required codecs for DVD playback.

Smart move BTS, LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice and is very alike, the Linux community got jumpy when Sun was sold and switched to Libre. We weren't sure how committed to open source Oracle were going to be. OO is still a good suite though.
Dgp & Violia, I'm pretty much the same. I switched to Win 2000 when I built my Athlon 2400XP system, so I could have USB2.

The last version of Windoze I liked was 2000, it just worked and managed to stay out of the way; most of the time you didn't know it was there which is how a good operating system should be. It's only an interface between your choice of hardware and your choice of software. Now newer iterations of Windoze want to do EVERYTHING whether you need it to or not. I eventually got used to XP and Win7, because I had to for clients' machines as much as anything, but I can't say I ever enjoyed the process.
SadElder, have you ever tried LibreOffice? It's an open source office suite that's file compatible with MS Office (doc & docx etc.) but the interface is much more like Office 2003 than 2007 onwards.
